An optometrist explains: how does stress affect your vision?

It is well known that stress has a huge impact on our bodies, but we often forget that stress also affects our eyes. Although stress and anxiety don’t cause permanent damage to your eyes, they can trigger and exacerbate eye-related problems. Both stress and anxiety increase the levels of adrenaline and cortisol in your body, which in turn affects muscle tension and blood flow in and around the eyes.

The most common eye-related problems when you experience stress, anxiety and fatigue:

  • Eye tension
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Eyelid twitching
  • Dryness of the eyes, which may also manifest as watery eyes
  • Photosensitivity
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

Eye problems caused by stress, strain and fatigue are usually temporary. They will disappear on their own if you let your eyes get enough rest, sleep well, keep yourself moving, eat a varied diet and reduce or remove sources of stress.
