Martin: “After the procedure, I went to play billiards with my brother the same evening.”

Martin underwent a laser procedure at Silmalaser, which freed him from the discomfort of wearing contact lenses. Read more about Martin’s experience and why he decided to have the laser procedure.

What kind of work do you do and what are your hobbies?

I’m a specialist in the Hydrology Department at the Environmental Agency. In my spare time I go to boxing and group training classes, and do other exciting sports.

Why did you decide to have the laser procedure and get rid of your contact lenses?

I do a lot of sports, and with glasses it’s just impossible. They either get blurry or fly away altogether. I’ve been wearing contact lenses for about 10 years now, but I have realised that only disposable lenses suit my eye type. I’ve spent quite a lot of money on them. If only there weren’t any problems with them! Sometimes they disappear into my eye, sometimes they simply come out during training. A couple of times, I got an eye infection. Both my partner and I decided to have the procedure because of a relative who had just had it. They compared the whole procedure to going to the dentist.

Why did you opt for Silmalaser?

Both the background check and the decision were actually made by my partner. I was the guinea pig in the family, so I went first. But they have also already had a consultation, and the date for the procedure has been set.

What was your biggest fear before the laser procedure?

I was afraid that it might be difficult to keep the eye still under the laser, and that I might make a wrong move purely out of a defensive reflex. In reality, at least from the patient’s point of view, the whole procedure is very simple. Follow a green dot and try not to move too much. Fortunately, there wasn’t a single moment when it hurt or when I absolutely had to adjust my position. The doctor who treated me was very friendly and professional. To be honest, I did not even feel afraid.

How did you feel after the procedure, when your vision had recovered and you could see the world around you without glasses?

Relived. Being without glasses and contact lenses is a liberating feeling! I went to play billiards with my brother the same evening. In his opinion, I won by cheating because my vision had been corrected so well.

What has been the biggest change in your life thanks to the laser procedure?

As it has only been one day since the procedure, it is still difficult to say. Perhaps that I no longer have to feel the sensation of a foreign body in my eye due to the contact lenses. And all that cleaning and maintaining of contact lenses and glasses was pretty annoying, too.

What do you recommend for those who are thinking about having the laser procedure?

Go for a pre-operative examination! Many of the claims you’ve heard are not true at all, and the pre-operative examination will answer all your questions. I myself am very happy with the whole process, and just as I advised my partner, I would recommend others to simply go for it.
