An optometrist explains: how to choose the right eyeglass frames

When buying glasses, wearers often have various questions.
Which frames to choose? With or without nose pads? Silmalaser optometrist Gerli Jones explains
The main advantages of frames with nose pads are:
- Adjustability – the nose pads can be adjusted to the shape and width of the nose.
- Comfort and weight distribution – if, for example, the nose is asymmetrical, the nose pads can be adjusted so that both sides of the nose have the same amount of support.
- Stability and grip – silicone nose pads have excellent grip, which ensures that the glasses stay in place during faster movements and in moist conditions.
- Hypoallergenic – the nose pads are made of skin-friendly materials (such as silicone and titanium), making them ideal for sensitive skin.
- Maintenance – the nose pads are replaceable, meaning that worn or uncomfortable pads can be replaced without having to replace the whole frame.
The main drawbacks of frames with nose pads are:
- Skin irritation and marks – with prolonged use, red marks may appear on the nose or irritation may develop, especially if the nose pads are improperly adjusted or the glasses are very heavy.
- Maintenance – the pads can break, disappear or become dirty over time, so they need to be replaced from time to time.
When it comes to frames without nose pads, there are also significant advantages:
- A lighter feel without pressure marks – without the pads, there is no concentrated pressure on specific points on the nose and the contact surface is larger.
- Durability and low maintenance – fewer components means fewer parts to clean and replace.
- A minimalist look – perfect for those who prefer a clean and modern style.
The drawbacks to frames without nose pads are:
- They cannot be adjusted – if the frame does not fit the person’s nose perfectly, it cannot be adjusted, which means there are fewer options to choose from.
- Risk of slipping – without nose pads, frames can start to sag, especially during faster movements or when looking down.
- Precise fit is essential – you need to choose a frame that fits the shape of your nose exactly, otherwise both comfort and vision will suffer.
