Inger Heleen Viikna
My education began at Tallinn School No. 21. From there, I went on to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tartu, from which I graduated in 2015. After university, I completed a five-year residency in ophthalmology, with a subspecialization in ophthalmic surgery. During my residency, I primarily practised at East Tallinn Central Hospital, as well as at the Eye Clinics of the University of Tartu and Ida-Viru Central Hospital. As part of an externship abroad, I studied at the IROC Eye Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland, under Prof. Dr T. Seileri, at the LaserVision Eye Clinic in Athens, Greece under Prof. A. John Kanellopoulos, and at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan, Italy under Prof. Dr P. Vinciguerra.
I have contributed to the development of dry eye treatment by setting up Estonia’s first dry eye clinic at Silmalaser in 2013. I am an ophthalmologist and surgeon with the internationally recognised title Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO), awarded in 2020. In my daily work, I am mainly drawn to eye surgery. I completed vitreoretinal surgery courses as part of the Ophthalmic Winteracademy in Austria (2018), and I am certified in blepharoplasty by the European College of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery (2016).
I consider the development of scientific research important and remain open to innovation and new approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. I regularly attend international conferences and seminars (both as an attendee and as a speaker) to stay up to date with the latest developments in medicine.
Apart from work, I enjoy playing tennis and spending time by the sea, whether on the shore or out on the water.
